Paradoxical Hypertrichosis
Laser-Stimulated Hair Growth

When laser makes hair worse, what it is, why it happens, and how electrolysis resolves it, permanently and precisely.

Also Known As

Laser-Stimulated Hair Growth · Terminalization · Laser-Induced Hypertrichosis

You went to remove hair.
You left with more.

"This is how we came to electrolysis. We understand this experience better than most, and we know exactly how to fix it."

Paradoxical Hypertrichosis (PH) is the clinical term for unexpected hair growth following laser or IPL hair removal. Instead of destroying the hair follicle, the laser energy stimulates dormant follicles into producing terminal hair, thicker, darker, and more noticeable than before.

It is documented in peer-reviewed literature including the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2025) and Dermatologic Surgery. It is not rare. It is not imagined. And it is not your fault.

Why It Happens

The science
explained simply.

When laser or IPL heat is absorbed by a follicle but is not enough to destroy it, that follicle can sometimes be stimulated to grow rather than disabled. The exact mechanism is not yet fully understood, and it is still being studied.

This can stimulate dormant vellus follicles (the fine, light 'peach fuzz') into producing darker, coarser, more visible hair where there was previously little or none.

Who Is Most At Risk

Risk factors
to know.

  • Darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types III–VI)
  • Fine, light, or vellus peach fuzz hair in treatment area
  • Hormonal conditions including PMOS/PCOS
  • Treatment on face and neck areas
  • IPL or Alexandrite laser treatments
  • Energy too low to fully destroy the follicle (one proposed factor)
  • Male clients (reported more often in the research)
The Solution

Why electrolysis
is the solution.

Electrolysis does not rely on pigment or light. It uses a fine probe and controlled electrical current to permanently destroy each individual follicle, regardless of hair colour, hair type, or previous laser treatment. There is no mechanism by which electrolysis can stimulate hair growth. The follicle is destroyed, not stimulated.

★★★★★

"As someone who has PMOS and tried laser before, which had only stimulated more growth, I was so happy to find this clinic and finally regain my confidence."
